The Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, has announced the first two of the seven winners of its annual National Design Awards, recognizing excellence in disciplines ranging from architecture to products to fashion. The New York museum is presenting a life-time achievement award to graphics guru Milton Glaser, who has conceptualized everything from restaurants (Windows on the World) to album covers (Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits) and logos (I Love New York). Aveda Corporation is to receive the corporate achievement award, acknowledging the company's dual emphasis on aesthetic concerns and environmentalism.
As for architecture category, Cooper-Hewitt is keeping us in suspense until a gala dinner on October 19. Finalists are: HOK Sport + Venue + Event founding principal Joseph E. Spear, Polshek Partnership Architects, Rafael Vinoly Architects, and Rick Joy.
